Prerequisites: The course is intended as final step of a critical consideration about the city, the region and their changes, and as last step of a he process of formation of the ability to design and programming, accrued during previous years the course assumes knowledge of the fundamentals about planning instruments and the main aspects the planning (as acquired in the courses of “Administrative Law” and “Urban Design and Laboratory”), as well as the ability to develop guidelines and projects at urban and territorial scale (one of the aims of the course of “Urban Planning and Techniques and Laboratory”).
Target skills and knowledge: Preparatory to the choice of subject and discipline for the final exam mainly oriented to design, the course aims to deepen the most relevant features of the planning disciplines, their theoretical contents and methodological approaches, tools and goals, also critically considering the most significant national and international experiences developed in the last years. The course aims also to improve the enhancement of the skills of analysis, interpretation and development of a project at different scales, already acquired by the student, as well as to assess developed independent thinking and purchased communication skills.
The course offers the chance – also through lectures and targeted communications given by different disciplines researchers – to get involved in urban planning questions that are affecting mainly contemporary cities and regions, underlining multifaceted problems, interdisciplinary approaches, interventions innovative contents, impacts assessments. Critical notes about design solutions recently set up will be encouraged to better understand current planning tendencies. All the remarks will be useful – if not crucial – to develop the project requested to pass the course final examination.
With this course, students should acquire some more methodological elements for planning, the ability to critically assess the contextual features, grasp the problem and set a range of viable solutions to solve them, keeping in mind the different dimensions (planning, architectural, social, economic, cultural) and the potential impacts of the project.
Examination methods: Students to be admitted to final test must provide a planning proposal developed during the course and the final examination will consist in the presentation and discussion of the project. It should be integrated with critical considerations voted to show their comprehension and acquired awareness of planning chief topics maturated in the design process.
The final work (which can also be developed in a group of not more than 4 members) shall consist of:

a) Poster 1 (A0 size). Survey. It must contain information about features of the selected area, a metropolitan and urban framework, critical interpretation of existing environmental, morphological, social and economic, demographic, planning conditions;
b) Poster 2 (A0 size). Detection of threats/potentialities. The board must list the significant critical points, underline potentials and resources to exploit in the new asset proposed for the selected area; also some project basic concepts;
c) Poster 3 (A0 size). Concept proposal. First and basic proposal for a new asset of the selected area, drawn up according to survey results; to the problems and resources detection, assessing the environmental and planning compatibility. The board must contain main proposed interventions for new residential developments, enhancement for public facilities, conservation or improving quality of rural or natural areas, green connections, infrastructure improvement for better and sustainable accessibility; indication for planning development;
d) Poster 4 (A0 size). Masterplan. It consists in the final design scheme for the new asset of the selected area, containing the most relevant planning development solutions, landscape enhancement proposals, zoning and building rules, detailed project for the different aspects for the suggested transformation;
e) A3 Report (A3 size), containing notes, sketches, general information, statistical data, documents and whatever else students consider useful materials for developing the project about present conditions of selected area, deterioration conditions, critical assessments, design proposal contents and building rules (the dossier must include photographic documentation and general urban design references).

During the discussion, students may supply multimedia devices of their choice (PowerPoint presentation, photos collections, videos, etc.).
Assessment criteria: The final assessment will take into account firstly personal interest and engagement displayed during the course, the active involvement to the class discussion, the inclination for deepening the topics and the argumentations set out at lessons and lectures.
Attention will be paid to the overall quality of the final project, the skill of individual members of the group to present the analyzed context, emphasizing the critical aspects and then explaining and arguing the various design choices, framing the project in the disciplinary debate about the contemporary city and its changes.
Course unit contents: The course is aimed primarily to introduce students to a variety of processes (and related effects) that occur in the city and in the present-day environment that seem to disrupt the traditional processes that have featured the growth and changes of the settlement organizations.
More than a purely descriptive or taxonomic term, “Contemporary City” is intended as a critical, synthetic and well-understanding concept to indicate new and strong modifications affecting today's society and places which communities use and consume, but also all the social practices involving the fruition of open spaces and the built environment.
Some aspects will be focused during classes, such as:

a) implications of innovative social practices and cultures, new styles of life and habits in planning strategies;
b) innovation in planning practices to front new social demands and fit public intervention to new real social needs, then the innovative solutions urban design outlines for appropriate solutions to new requirements;
c) new planning contents compared to traditional approaches, due to different political and social context and to structural changes after the last world crisis; manifested climatic changes and the increasing awareness about environmental risks.

Students will be invited to look carefully to some aspects of the contemporary city and particularly reflect in a critical way about suitable approaches to plan in the city and the territory in order to ensure not only better quality of housing and collective life places but also natural resources protection and the environment conservation. A little effort will be requested to conceive design proposal in a prospective of sustainability and urban resilience, with original and innovative design solutions and planning rules.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will be organized with lectures on theoretical-methodological issues, with a focus on urban regeneration projects, redevelopment and enhancement of public space design or residential neighbourhoods regeneration according to an eco-sustainable approach, waterfronts, to be intended as an emblematic "place" of the rhetorical, policies and innovative projects of urban regeneration. Some of the lectures will be used to jointly develop design to provide students with the necessary support to research and design.
Additional notes about suggested reading: During the course, according to the expressed needs of the students, specific bibliographic references will be provided for a better planning questions understanding, mostly city growth and changes, settlements transformations and processes that characterize and influence them.
There will be indications for contents in the main (Italian and international) planning journal or retrieved in the net which will help students to reflect and examine in detail items dealt during lessons and seminars useful to develop the final planning proposal.
Many books and handbooks will be available during lesson, provided by tutors and lecturer (Mo_Bib).
