Prerequisites: In order to attend the course, students should already have attended the courses up to the third year of the master degree programme, and preferably have passed the exams.
In particular, knowledge and skills acquired in the following courses are considered essential, though not mandatory: Architectural and Urban Composition I and II and Design Studios; History of Architecture and History of Contemporary Architecture.
Target skills and knowledge: The main aim of the course is acquiring and developing knowledge about theories, techniques and methods of analysis, interpretation and design of today's city. Teaching and learning activities will focus on theories of architectural and urban design nowadays, as well as on composition techniques regarding functional layouts and formal composition of space, according to which the city is defined in elements, parts or layers.
Furthermore, the course aims at boosting transeversal skills, such as indipendent critical thinking, capability to communicate and fully explain one's project along with its conceptual fundamentals, awareness of one's role as a professional in complex contexts, as well as the capability to cope with complex problems and to control and solve them through ground-breaking and non-ordinary methodologies.
Examination methods: The final exam consists in a critical discussion of the exercises held during the course, with particular reference to design choices, methodologies, consistency of the different technical and formal aspects. The presentation of the theoretical basis of the discipline, dealt with during the course, aims to assess the grade of knowledge and grade of awareness reached by the student.
The carried out work will be represented in about 3 to 4 A0 size boards, a 1:500 scale model, a video or a powerpoint presentation.
Besides traditional techniques of represeantation, students will be encouraged to use advanced ICT.
Assessment criteria: The final assessment will take into account the following parameters:
a) interest and engagement shown during the Design Studio and contribution to the debate;
b) architectural quality of the final project and consistency among form, function, structure.
c) ability to relate one's work to contemporary architectural design culture;
d) ability to esteblish relationships with the city, using architectural design tools. The potential of project to affect controlled transformations throughout the context will be positively assessed;
e) ability to provide effective representation of the project and the process of composition, with appropriate graphical tools and vocabulary.
Course unit contents: Teaching considers the project of a urban area as working tool, rather than as a mere goal. Students are expected to control the process of formal definition on different topics and at different scales.
Object of study will be peri-urban areas of Padua.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course activity lasts about twelve weeks. Each week features a specific theme in content and methods of conducting the activity.
Each theme will be developed through lectures, surveys and insights, carried out in form of design studio and checked in every phase of development.
Students will be divided into groups, each of which will focus to a single theme.
The work will be carried out mainly in the classroom. Several intermediate tests are provided, through collective discussion of the drawings produced during the work. Key part of the learning process is the collective critical review of the exercises.
Students will be invited to actively join the dabate, to compare their job with others', to express their opinions and assessment about their mates' job, in order to boost critical thinking, communication abilities and responsible awareness.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Training materials in order to support the course consists of:
- information and documentary sheets related to the architecture shown during the lessions (containing text, images, references, links to websites)
- Explanatory texts of the exercises.
- Graphic schemes to support the conduct of the exercises
- Rules for the drafting of the drawings and manual, as well as digital.
The materials will be available in paper and / or digital, before the beginning and the proper conduct of the individual exercises.
