North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by R. S. Stevenson

The Victorian age will be discussed in class and students will be asked to study it with a particular focus on: the industrial revolution, education, social position of women, empire and imperialism, political and social reform, morals, the press, relationship between literature and the press, serialization, rise and canonization of new literary genres, narrative vs poetry, scientific culture, fin de siècle.
