Syllabus
Prerequisites: Descriptive Statistics, Inference, Statistical Models
Target skills and knowledge: Skills to acquire: data analyses in medical statistics.
The course introduces the main issues concerning the analysis of real data in the medical field. The course aims, through the discussion of case studies, to increase the sensitivity and criticality of the students to the use of statistical methods in clinical trials.
Examination methods: Written and / or oral exam.
Assessment criteria: The assessment of the preparation of the students will be based on their understanding of the topics, on the acquisition of concepts and the methodologies proposed in the course, and the ability to apply them.
Course unit contents: - Randomized clinical trials (clinical trials):
- Study designs: studies between patients (parallel group design, factorial design),
studies with-in patients (cross-over design, Latin square design)
- Studies of power (determination of sample size)
- Exploratory analyzes and goodness of fit tests
- Comparisons between two or more groups
- Parametric and nonparametric methods for post-hoc multiple comparisons
- Anova for repeated measures: Parametric and nonparametric methods
- Indicators of reliability of clinical responses: Diagnostic tests; Roc curve and model P (X <Y); Repeatability, reproducibility
- Dose-response curves: Non-linear models
- Critical discussion of case studies through instruments already acquired in previous courses (ANCOVA, survival data, logistic regression, ....)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is based on lectures and exercises also with the software R.
