Syllabus
Prerequisites: Statistics 1, Statistics 2, Basics of probability calculus
Target skills and knowledge: 1. Understanding strengths and limits of both sample-based and exhaustive surveys

2. Acquiring or reinforcing basic elements of theory of:
o Total survey management
o Computer-based questionnaire design
o Sample survey design

3. Enhancing skills for:
o Designing sample surveys that involve optimum data collection techniques for the research project at hand
o Choosing criteria for data collection (computer-assisted versus paper-and pencil questionnaires, self-administered versus administered by interviewers, different questionnaires according to communication channel) that are focused on the research situation
o Designing a computer-assisted questionnaire focused on the research situation
o Selecting a probabilistic sample and judging the eligibility of a quota sample
o Defining the optimum sample size
o Writing a research report that can inform the research result recipients

4. Developing sensitivity, wording and critical sensibility about data collection methodology that can help a professional statistician in most possible real situations
Examination methods: The examination consists of a written test and two practical projects.
The written test consists of four open questions. The students who pass an a test based on multi-response questions, administered in the departmental Computer Room will be admitted to the written test.
The practical projects are the realization of
a) a short electronic questionnaire suitable for a computer-assisted survey;
b) a written project on a survey matter to be arranged with the teacher; the project can be realized by a team of no more than four students.
Assessment criteria: The examination mark will be obtained as sum of the three tests:
- the mark obtained in the written test (max 25/30),
- the mark obtained in the realization of the electronic questionnaire (max 3/30),
- the mark obtained in the written project (max 4/30).
The student who scores the top evaluation in all the three tests will be graded ‘with laudem’.

The scores obtained in any test (both written and practical) keep their validity for 12 months.
Course unit contents: 1. Sample survey methodology
- Sample survey and social research; survey design.
- Techniques for data collection (face to face, telephone, mail, and diary surveys); computer-assisted data collection.

2. Sampling theory and techniques
- Probability sampling and quota sampling
- Varying and equal probability sampling; random and systematic selection; self-weighting samples; sampling from inadequate or multiple lists.
- Simple random sampling: estimation of the population mean; error in estimates; properties of an estimator.
- Stratified sampling: proportional and optimum designs; implicit selection.
- Stages selection: PPS and PPES sampling, areal sampling; intraclass correlation measurement and control.
- Rotated sampling for panel surveys.
- Survey costs: fixed and varying cost classes.
- Examples of complex sampling designs: The Labour Force Survey of Istat and the CPS – Current Population Survey of the US Bureau of the Census.

3. Electronic questionnaire design
- Questionnaire design: graph representation of questionnaire structure; question wording; question ordering; choice of the response alternatives.
- Methodology of electronic questionnaires for computer-assisted data collec-tion.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching will be mainly based on frontal lectures, even if the teacher will involve students in so far as the class size will allow it.

The practice classes (10 hours) aim at developing students’ skills of realizing an electronic questionnaire. The lecturer will be named before the classes start.
