Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student is supposed to possess basic knowledge of statistics.
Examination methods: (see below)
Assessment criteria: The exam is composed of three parts, one is an individual oral examination for profit, the second is a practical exercise of constructing an electronic questionnaire, and the third is a project work.
The project work can be delivered, together with another student, on a topic agreed with the teacher.
The final grade is the sum of the grades obtained in the three parts.
Course unit contents: 1. Data collection design
a. Sample survey: possible uses and phases
b. Data collection techniques: face-to-face interviewing, telephone inter-viewing, mail survey, diary; computer-assisted interviewing
c. Questionnaire design: graph structure of a questionnaire, question de-sign (structure, order, response item selection)

2. Sampling design
a. Probability and non-probability sampling
b. Constant and variable probabilities, weighting, self-weighting samples
c. Sampling and non-sampling errors
d. Random and systematic sample selection
e. Simple random sampling: selection, estimation
f. Stratified sampling design (proportional, optimal implicit stratification)
g. Multistage sampling design (PPS, intraclass correlation)
h. Optimal sample size
i. Sample design of the Italian Labour Survey realized by Istat
