Prerequisites: The course of "Basic statistics" is the required background, while the course of "Calculus 1" is propaedeutic.
Target skills and knowledge: The course presents basic concepts and essential tools in order to: measure stocks and flows of the economic process; understand the accounting relationships among economic aggregates; assess their change over time in nominal and real terms; gauge the distribution of economic resources among units/firms, households, individuals.
The course will make reference to the Italian system of economic statistics and will present and discuss the main approaches used to acquire economic information (censuses, sample surveys, registers).
The course’s structure mixes traditional classes devoted to the presentation and explanation of the topics, and sessions where students deal with actual data and apply concepts and methods to solve real – though reasonably simple – problems of measurement in economics.
Examination methods: Students have to pass first a pre-test examination (on theory topics) and then a written exam (practice exercises).
Assessment criteria: Students will be evaluated according to their level of understanding the topics covered by the course, as well as the main features of the tools adopted for solving some problems of measurement in economics.
Course unit contents: 1. Introduction: factors of production and the main approaches to acquire economic information.
2. Factors of production: estimation of material capital; measurement of labour supply and labour input, with special attention to the Continuous Labour Force Survey.
3. Estimating the results of the economic processes: Value Added, Gross Domestic Product and Gross National Product; the system of national accounts.
4. Index numbers, especially price indices: methodological aspects; their use for measuring inflation and producing time-series of aggregates in real terms.
5. Indices of concentration and distribution of economic resources, with emphasis on indices of economic inequality and poverty measures.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Face-to-face sessions are scheduled, devoted both to the presentation and explanation of the topics and to some practice exercises on real data.
Session attendance is not compulsory, however it is strongly recommended.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Materials from the ISTAT website.
Notes prepared by the teaching staff will be available.
