Prerequisites: Knowledge acquired in the courses of Chemistry, Mineralogy and Paleontology
Target skills and knowledge: Description and classification of sedimentary rocks; understanding the processes leading to the formation of sedimentary rocks and of the main geological processes that affect the Earth system, with reference to geological history of North-eastern Italy.
Examination methods: Description and classification of sedimentary rocks; interpretation of geological maps; open questions on the lectures. Two written tests with open questions will be made during the course.
Assessment criteria: Learning course content
Course unit contents: Sedimentary rocks. Textures and structures. Description and classification.
The bedding. Internal structures, polarity of sedimentary successions. Principles of stratigraphy.
Geochronology. Stratigraphic units and correlations. Stratigraphic discontinuities.
Facies and depositional environments. Sedimentary cycles.
Elements of structural geology: rock deformation, faults and folds. Earthquakes. Internal structure of the Earth. Lithosphere and asthenosphere. Isostasy. Heat flows. Paleomagnetism and seafloor expansion. Hot spots.
Plate tectonics. Plate margins. Arc-trench systems. Plate tectonics and orogeny. Ophiolites.
Elements of Geology of the Eastern Southern Alps.
Tutorials: macroscopic identification of sedimentary rocks and sedimentary structures, reading of geological maps, running
of geological sections.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Examples and exercises; description of sedimentary rocks and their classification; interpretation of geological maps; interpretation of sedimentary successions with particular reference to northeastern Italy; field excursions with observation and interpretation of natural phenomena.
Additional notes about suggested reading: teacher's handouts and iconographic material used for lectures and exercises will be available.
