Syllabus
Prerequisites: Chemistry, physics and mathematics courses of the first and second year
Target skills and knowledge: The main object of the course is to provide the students with the basics of the relationship between structure and properties of the different classes of materials.
Examination methods: Written
Assessment criteria: The assessment will be based on the student's understanding of the arguments, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed and the ability to apply them in a conscious and autonomous.
Course unit contents: Structure of the materials: bonds, crystalline and amorphous structure, defects in the crystals.
Thermodynamics of solid state materials: phase diagrams, surface energy.
Phase transformations and diffusion. Glass transition.
Properties of materials: mechanical, thermal, corrosion, optical.
Different classes of materials and their processes.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures.

Additional Information for students of the Bachelor of Science Materili
The course of Materials Science is divided into two modules. The module B is borrowed from the course of Fundamentals of Materials Science, and the module A is given by Prof. A. Marigo. The program of module A is the following:
General information on polymeric materials: classification of homopolymers and copolimeri. Costituzione, configuration and conformation of macromolecules. Mechanisms of polymerization. Polymerization processes. Definition of average molecular weights, the molecular weight distribution, and description of the methods for their determination. Glass transition. Crystallization of the polymers and methods for the determination of the degree of crystallinity. Chemical- physical -mechanical properties of polymers and their determination. Methods of processing of polymeric materials. Compounding description of the main polymeric materials: thermoplastic and thermosetting materials. Artificial and synthetic fibers. Polymer films. Natural and synthetic elastomers. Polymer composites.
The exam will be oral.
