Target skills and knowledge: The course has the aim to provide a basic knowledge in calculus, biostatistics, probability and physics applied to biological sciences. The course is divided into a main part of 5 ULC (42 hours) of Principles of biostatistics and physics (FIS/07) and a minor part of 5 ULC of Calculus and probability (MAT/06).
Examination methods: Principles of biostatistics and physics (FIS/07; 5 ULC): written exam based on exercises.
Calculus and probability (MAT/06): written exam based on four exercises (by two hours of time examination); it is neither allowed the consultation of books and slides nor the use of the calculator.
Assessment criteria: Each exercise accounts for a specific amount in the highest grade of 33/30 (corresponding to 30 cum laude). The criteria for a positive assessment are correctness, accuracy and completeness of the solutions of the exercises.
Course unit contents: Principles of biostatistics and physics (FIS/07; 5 ULC) - General concepts of biostatistics. Descriptive statistic: measures of position and variation. Normal distribution of population and selection index. Correlation and regression between two continuous variables. Statistical hypothesis and statistic test procedure. Hypothesis test one- or two-sided. Types of errors in inferences, ╬▒ and P-values. Goodness-of-fit test (Chi-Square test). Kruskal-Wallis non parametric test. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).
Kinematics. Trajectory and graph of a motion. Velocity and acceleration. One-dimensional motion with constant velocity and one-dimensional motion with constant acceleration. Circular motion with constant velocity. Dynamics. Laws of motion. Work. Kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy. Conservation of energy. Thermodynamics. Pressure, temperature, heat. Scales of temperature. The laws of thermodynamics. Ideal gas laws. Isothermals, isobars, adiabatics. Work done by an expanding gas.

Calculus and probability (MAT/06; 5 ULC)- Functions and their graphs. Elementary functions (polynomials, power functions, exponential functions, logarithms, trigonometric functions). Limits. Additional law, product law, quotient law, substitution law. Derivatives and their geometrical meaning. Derivatives of elementary functions. Basic differentiation rules. Increasing and decreasing functions, maxima and minima points. The equation of the tangent line to the graph of a function at a point. The concept of integral. Combinatorial calculus. The concept of probability.Conditional probability and independence. Bayes theorem. Random variables and distribution functions. Expected value. Variance and standard deviation. Standard random variable z. Discrete random variables (Bernoulli, binomial, Poisson) and continuous random variables (normal, Gamma). Central limit theorem.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Principles of biostatistics and physics (FIS/07; 5 ULC) - In class teaching (42 hours) including the revision of the homework exercises.
Calculus and probability (MAT/06) - In class teaching (40 hours); it is required the execution of some homework exercises.
