Syllabus
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide essential tools to analyse some features which are typical to the conceptual and productive approach to realistic cinema with reference to some particularly significant works in the field of language experimentation and innovation.
At the same time there is a learning process to give critical skills and expertise with the aim of learning some elements of production techniques, post-production and obtaining funds in order to allow and encourage further personal research and development.
Course unit contents: The course moves to analyse the documentary approach and how this causes some questions about the position of reality in front of the film camera. Parts of significant works, which influenced theoretical evolution, will be shown, with particular focus on the complex relationships between documentary and narrative cinema, analysing the common elements and the specific functions of the language, and giving an overview starting from the origins until the onset of digital technology. From the analysis of the pieces it is especially important to begin a consideration of the different modes of portrayal and of the degree of experimentation and freedom of expression which can be adopted during conception and production of a film. The course offers a learning path based on the comparison between theoretical reflection and practice, which aims to give the student useful methods and techniques to understand the semiotic, aesthetic and ideological elements which characterise single works while also regarding current production availability.
