Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of history and archaeology of the late antique and medieval periods.
Target skills and knowledge: By the end of the course students will:
Be familiarised with key themes and debates within early medieval archaeology
Know the main scientific methods used in medieval archaeology
Read a scientific paper, understand the maiin contents, summarise and present it in public.
Be able to evaluate critically different case studies
Develope a reseach that puts into practice one or more about the topics learned and present it orally and on a written report.
Examination methods: Participation in the discussions held during the seminars
Oral presentation of a research work
Written presentation of a research work (no more than 10 pages)
Eventually a written proof.
Assessment criteria: Critical comprehension of the subjects, interest and participation
Course unit contents: This course will explore the monumental, religious, and social developments that took place in Europe and the Mediterranean between the 6th and the 12th centuries with particular attention to burial customs in order to understand how archaeologist reconstruct past life from burial contexts. We will also analyse also among other subjects: the end of the classical cities, diffusion of christianism, arrival of new populations and their impact on economy, landscapes and culture.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Presentation of the main subjects, invited seminars by foreign specialists, laboratory activities, discussions on scientific papers, oral presentations on case studies by the students
