Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of the history of Europe and extra-European countries is required. Interest for the subject, as well as the critical reading of historical sources and literature is desiderable in order to focus and elaborate specific aspects of the early modern Europe.
Target skills and knowledge: Skills to critically revise readings and eventually to draw a short article. It should be accompanied by critical commentary, and structured organically with judgment autonomy.
Examination methods: Lectures with use of power-points, images, original sources and graphs.
Assessment criteria: Some lessons may be in seminar form, with student’s involvements on subject of particular interest, even related to the contemporary age. Final exam will be in oral form.
Course unit contents: The course aims to understand the concept and idea of Europe. Beyond the general history of the “old” continent, the different State-building processes will be analyzed and compared in order to stimulate the understanding of similarities and differences among the European States between the late 15th and the mid-nineteenth century.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Knowledge of the European history and civilization, as well as the non-European connections, between the late 15th to the mid-nineteenth century. Historical as well as cultural events will be analyzed.

Periods A +B (compulsory for 6CFU) – History of Early modern Europe (1492-1847)
History of the European civilization from the late 15th to the mid-nineteenth century (40 hours).

Period C (3CFU): Biography of Martin Luther at the origin of the Early Modern History (20 hours. So, students that have to do the 3 CFU exam, will study just this book G. MONTINARO, Martin Lutero. Il frate ribelle, named below in the bibliography.
