Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge concerning the transformation, role and social implications of communication technologies; understanding of mechanisms that lead to policies and governance arrangements, including political participation; curiosity for the global dimension of communication phenomena; interest in research work, including group work, and critical discussions.
Target skills and knowledge: Expected results: acquisition of elements to support critical analysis of contemporary reality, with a global outlook, with a special focus on the themes, problems and challenges posed by the developments of information and communication technologies; combined with the identification (in a theoretical- practical view) of approaches, methods and techniques for the study of complex phenomena such as social interactions in the global context.

Expected cognitive results: acquisition of theoretical-methodological frameworks and mastering of different international realities (organizations, initiatives) representatives of developments that characterize communication and knowledge societies.
Examination methods: Written papers and oral class presentation are integral part of the course for final evaluation
Assessment criteria: Evaluation will include the overall participation of students in class discussions and activities (20%); availability and commitment in reading assigned materials and participate in dialogues in class (30%); commitment, autonomy and creativity in conducting research group work and concluding assessment (50%).
Course unit contents: The course offers opportunities to master historical-international evolutions that still influence/condition challenges faced by information and communication societies. Moreover, the course provides conceptual and methodological tools to operate in the context of global communications, with a focus on content (topics, priorities, complexities), processes and actors involved (their role and interests), with a special focus on current international debates: World Summit on the Information Society+10, Internet Governance debates, Global Alliance for Media and Gender.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course adopts an innovative methodology, which combines lectures with seminars, including with the contribution of external experts, research activity and discussions, on the basis of videos or other materials to be analyzed in class. Foreseen are also international exchanges via teleconference, to be arranged according to European and International expert partners’ availability.
Additional notes about suggested reading: A section on the Moodle platform is activated to integrate class activities; collect and make available materials, readings, instructions for group work. Interactive modes between teacher and students will also be activated, in the form of a ‘course diary’. Study materials are mainly made available in English, while research activities may be conducted in different languages, reflecting students’ competence.
