Syllabus

Common characteristics of the Integrated Course unit

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of laboratory medicine, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, basic oncology, physiopathology and clinical methodology is essential.
Target skills and knowledge: In terms of hematological and oncological diseases, immune system diseases and rheumatic diseases (locomotion system and connective tissues), at the end of the course the student must demonstrate:
• a suitable knowledge of nosographical, etiopathogenetic, physiopathological, anathomopathological and clinical profiles;
• a suitable ability to recognize, critically interpret and correlate the principal symptoms and physical signals as well as to request and understand the essential laboratory and instrumental procedures;
• a suitable ability to identify conditions requiring the contribution of the specialist in the field.
Examination methods: The evaluation will be made with an oral examination and will be divided in two parts:
Part 1 will deal with Hematology and Medical Oncology disciplines.
Part 2 will concern Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology fields.
Students must register in the lists that will be prepared independently for the two parts.
The result of the examination of each part will be registered by secretariat services and the final score will result from the average of the scores achieved in the two parts.
Assessment criteria: The ability of the student will be evaluated in terms of knowledge, his/her manner to present and discuss the matter.

Specific characteristics of the Module

Course unit contents: 1) Definition, classification epidemiology, prevention and socio-economic aspects; critical analysis of clinical trials;
2) Patient evaluation: clinical history, clinical examination, analysis of performance status and quality of life parameters;
3) Laboratory investigations: speficic and aspecific disease parameters, immuno-hematologic parameters, clinical-laboratoristic correlation;
4) Pathogenesis, clinical and histopathologic hallmarks;
5) Diagnostic procedures and flow-chart
6) Pharmacologic and therapeutic approach to the following diseases:

o Primary and secondary immunodeficiencies, including HIV-related immunologic impairment
o Autoimmune cytopenia
o Organ and non-organ specific autoimmune diseases
o Vasculitides (systemic and hypersensitivity vasculitides, ANCA-associated, giant-cell arteritis, Kawasaki, Behcet, Takayasu, Panarteritis nodosa)
o Immune-mediated interstitial lung diseases (sarcoidosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, eosinophilic pneumonia, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis)
o Allergic diseases (rhinits, asthma, food-related allergy/intolerance, hymenoptera and drug-related, atopic dermatitis, eczema, urticaria, angioedema) anaphylaxis
