Syllabus
Prerequisites: The notions learned in high school will be sufficient to deal with the study of the discipline, which will be explained, however, even in its basic elements.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to bring the student to know:
-the properties of atoms and molecules and the principles underlying their behavior in the biological systems
-the properties and reactivity of the various classes of organic compounds
-the general aspects of the structure of the biological macromolecules
Examination methods: Ex cathedra lectures, practical exercises and tutorial training: n. 84.
Labs: 12 h/student.
Assessment criteria: Examination consists of a written test comprising both multiple choice tests and questions to which the student must respond with a brief report.
Course unit contents: At the end of the Course the student will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of:

Part I
Structure and properties of atoms, mechanisms of molecule formation and interactions.
- Solution state with particular reference to water as solvent.
- Parameters regulating chemical reactions.
- Chemical equilibria.
- Biological meaning of oxidation-reduction reactions.

Part II
Structure and basal properties of:
- Hydrocarbons.
- Carbon compounds containing oxygen.
- Carbon compounds containing nitrogen.
- Carbon compounds containing sulfur
- Isomerism
- Multifunctional compounds

Part III
Structure and basal properties of:
- Carbohydrates
- Amino acids and proteins
- Chromoproteins
- Glycoproteins
- Lipids and fat-soluble vitamins
