Syllabus
Prerequisites: Prerequisite is having passed the examination of Architectural History
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide the knowledge and methodology for the study of buildings and historical settlements, necessary to operate professionally with historical-critical knowledge. It deepens the theoretical, design and historiographical issues relevant to the main stages in the history of architecture and cities, between the second half of the XVIII century and the first half of the XX century. The Workshop work foresees the acquisition of a first methodology of reading and analysis of the historical-architectural and historical-environmental heritage for the knowledge and interpretation of construction and urban evolution.
Examination methods: During the examen, the student will demonstrate the knowledge of the bibliography and topics covered in the lectures. Admission to the examen will take place after the approval of the work done during the workshop , which will conclude with a seminar.
Assessment criteria: The assessment will be based on the verification of the laboratorial work and then on the report that will be the outcome. The student will also be evaluated on the basis ofknowledge of the topics of the course, and the ability to analize the buildings in their historical context.
Course unit contents: The discussion of theoretical, architectural and Historical issues , relating to the most significant episodes of architecture from the second half of the eighteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century will complete the institutional framework of historical knowledge set in the course of history of architecture. The course will deal with the more general issues relating to the period from Neoclassicism to the Modern Movement in a predominantly European and North American perspective ( the classical tradition in Western architecture , neoclassical architecture in Europe; architecture and Eclecticism in European cities , architecture and cities in the United States between the nineteenth and twentieth century, the different aspects of Art Nouveau and the Modern Movement in Europe).
It also seeks to highlight a historical perspective the different components present in the activity of the project, reflecting on significant aspects ( including in relation to the current view ) to the culture of the future construction engineer - architect ( history of training of engineers and architects : Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris at the Politecnico of Milan ; history of literature for the project; history of new construction materials : technical and aesthetic construction in iron in the nineteenth century, the architecture of reinforced concrete by patents nineteenth-century architects of the Modern Movement ) .
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists of lectures, workshops, tutorials, seminars and guided visits. Purpose of the Laboratory is the transmission of a research method based to the specialist knowledge of historic buildings and their contexts. This method will allow future engineer-architect of operating in its design with an informed historical-critical method, in designing from scratch or to intervene on existing structures.
Lectures / seminar and study visits will focus on subjects that can only mention in the course of lectures. Attendance at lectures, tutorials and laboratory is mandatory
