Syllabus
Prerequisites: In order to take full advantage of this English for Law course, an intermediate level of competence in general English is suggested.
Target skills and knowledge: Capacity to distinguish among various legal texts within an international legal context and within the common law - treaties, constitutions, judgments, and legislative acts - each with their own specific language and communicative purpose.
Capacity to develop a strategy for collecting, organizing, and consolidating legal terminology in different areas of law within the common law system.
Capacity to interact and develop communicative competences (using language appropriately and spontaneously) in English in the comprehension and discussion of legal texts proposed in the course.
Capacity to distinguish common grammatical structures that are characteristic of legal texts.
Capacity to visually recognize the structural organization of legal texts in different areas of law.
Examination methods: The final evaluation consists of a written exam based on the knowledge and comprehension of various legal texts proposed in the course - both from the required book and the 'extra readings' - with particular attention to the language of the law. On special request, one can challenge the written mark with an oral exam in the following exam session. For the oral discussion, which must be approved by the professor, students can choose a topic from the program or from a chapter in the course book.

On-going evaluations are programmed for attenders during the course.
Course unit contents: The principle objective of the course is to provide an introduction to the language of the law - in English - to young aspiring lawyers through the use of authentic legal texts in international legal contexts and within the common law. It aims to develop both the linguistic knowledge of the law and its legal terminology in depth, thus acquiring the competence to consult, interpret, and discuss legal texts, using the language of the law appropriately. The acquisition of linguistic competence is developed through various activities: the study of legal terminology in different areas of the law and grammatical analysis of the language used in legal texts.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Chapter I English in Legal Contexts (up to and including a 1.5.4 ); Chapter 2 The Language of the Legal System (up to and including 2.5.2); Chapter 3 The European Dimension (up to and including 3.4.4), it is advised to read 3.6 Reflection and comparison: L`Italia e la Convenzione europea per i diritti dell`uomo (di Serena Forlati); Chapter 4 The Language of Criminal Law (up to and including 4.5.2); Chapter 5 Introduction to common law method: only from 5.3.1 Judicial precedent, 5.3.2 Stare decisis, 5.3.3 Ratio decidendi up to and including 5.4.2; Chapter 6 The Language of Contract (up to and including 6.2.4) and (from 6.3.1 to 6.3.4 included), it is advised to read 6.5 Reflection and comparison (di De Benetti).

Other supplementary texts entitled ‘Extra Readings’ - which are part of the written exam - can be downloaded week-to-week from our elearning site elearning/ Materiale didattico/Laurea magistrale in Giurisprudenza/Inglese giuridico.
Additional notes about suggested reading: It is advised to consult a legal dictionary: The Oxford Dictionary of Law, Oxford University Press, Oxford: England; Black's Law Dictionary, Bryan A. Garner, West Publishing Group, New York: USA. It is also advised to consult the bilingual legal dictionary - Dizionario Giuridico di Francesco De Franchis, Giuffrè, Milano, Vol.1 Inglese-Italiano - in the library.
