Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic competence in European history in the antiquity, middle and modern ages. Basic legal concepts. The course covers the essential points of both by documents linked to the chapters.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at the acquisition of relevant competence in the methods and the state of the art with regard to the history of the origins and development of the government, the legal system and the jurisprudence in the Republic of Venice, as well as in their similarities and differences from the other legal systems of the times.
Examination methods: Individual oral examination.
Assessment criteria: The competence of student will be evaluated on the comprehension of the topics included in the course and their reciprocal interrelations, as well as on the proficiency in the approach to the archival and bibliographical documents relevant to the discipline.
Course unit contents: Introduction: topics, methods, course materials, essential information and concepts; Before independence (antiquity-VIII century); Ducatus (742-1143); Comune (1143-1297); Republic (1297-1454); Dominante (1454-1797)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures introducing and detailing the characters of each phase of development, with in-depth study of materials, archival and bibliographical evidence and historiography related to each.
The course is held in the English and Italian languages.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The course will make use of the digital handbook by Silvia Gasparini et al., Pax tibi Marce. Venice: government, law, jurisprudence = Pax tibi Marce. Venezia: istituzioni, diritto, giurisprudenza, Padova 2013, under elaboration.
The handbook will be made available to the students online and/or as DVD.
The handbook will consist of .html files as an essential outline for each chapter, with links to .pdf files about specific topics, illustrations, maps, documents and historiography.
