Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of basic concepts of social and general psychology, and of measurement, because course topics are related both to those of other methodological courses a (for instance, on research methods), and to themes of social, developmental, work and general psychology (e.g., psychology of attitudes, thought processes, lifespan changes, work issues).
Target skills and knowledge: Learn basic theoretical and empirical knowledge on main methods of data gathering that are based on questionnaires, telephone and face-to-face interview, mail questionnaires, and electronic questionnaires, and on focus groups. Such knowledge is necessary to use these methods in psycho-social research in general, and in various applied domains of interest.
Examination methods: Type of examination: written, with 3-5 open questions on specific topics.
An oral integration is possible if the student, or the teacher, asks for it.

Examination question examples: discuss at least 2 types of closed questions; discuss which biases may characterize closed questions; discuss how interviewers have to be trained; discuss potential bias effects associated with values of response options.

If the student passes the exam, he/she can then ask to have an oral examination to improve the obtained grade. The teacher likewise can ask the student to be orally examined.
Assessment criteria: Students' performance on the exam will be evaluated in terms of the correctness of his/her answers with regard to the study materials and as regards the extent to which answers display a good understanding of the materials.
Course unit contents: Introduction: questionnaire and interviews; why ask questions to people.
Questions: research types and data collection modalities; research design, research “ingredients”, data quality. Research aims, constraints, research variables.
The process of answering questions. Types of questions; phrasing; answer errors.
Constructing the measurement instrument; variables to consider. Biases and contextual effects in questions and in answer categories, and in data quality.
Training and supervising interviewers.
Research phases: sampling; collecting, coding and analysing data
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Topics are dealt with both in their general, theoretical aspects, and with examples from research. The texts for the exam will offer students the opportunity to revise and enlarge their knowledge on the dealt with topics. Some classroom time will be devoted to practical exercises on various topics – research planning, question phrasing, choosing an answer modality, etc.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The manual by Zammuner, V.L. (1998). “Tecniche dell'intervista e del questionario”. Il Mulino, Bologna, needs to be studied with great attention.
The book by Zammuner, V.L. (2003). “Il focus group”. Il Mulino, Bologna, has to be read (reading Chap. 2, pp. 77-103, is optional), but the student does not need to have a knowledge of it as 'precise' as is required for “Tecniche dell intervista e del questionario”.
