Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic ideas in congtive psychology, descriptive statistics
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is introducing students to experimental design choice and to discuss the principal experimental paradigms used in cognitive science. The students will be trained to critical thinking of empirical research. The objectives are: a) to develop capacity for critically evaluating "scientific evidence" that is communicated in academic journals, the popular press, and other outlets b) develop skills in designing and conducting research studies, collecting and analyzing data, drawing appropriate conclusions based on statistical results; c) communicate ideas, methods and results.
Examination methods: The final grade will consist of: - a final exam (40%), a group activity (30%) and some individual activity (30%). The group activity consists of the critical presentation of a research project in class; the individual work consists in writing the reports and the exercises given in class. The reports should be given according to a calendar that will be decided during the beginning lessons or with large advance.
Assessment criteria: The final exams tests the acquisition of theoretical contents of the lectures. It consists of a series opened questions. The evaluation of the group presentation is based on the capacity to develop a research project, to individuate the research questions, the methods to be used, the appropriate experimental design. The research reports will be evaluated on the basis of timeliness and precision and they will be corrected in class.
Course unit contents: Experimental design
Variables and operationalization
Inferential statistics rationale: understand, identify and discriminate between different types of statistical inference
Resul Interpretation
Ethical standards of research
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The classes are organized in lectures, group and discussion activity, individual work. Attending classes is recommended. Many of the arguments are not included in the text book
Additional notes about suggested reading: Support materials will be available in the Moodle site of the Course
