Syllabus
Prerequisites: Because knowledge regarding physiology, pharmacology, psycology, anaesthesiology etc. are important for the understanding of this topic, it is necessary to have passed the examen of Anestesiologia Generale e Speciale Odontostomatologica for a CLOPD student and the examen Primo Soccorso for a CLID student.
Target skills and knowledge: The student who pass this examination will be able to prevent and treat the medical emergencies more often encountered in the dental office.
Examination methods: Examination will be oral or written, depending on student choice; moreover, the student must perform a practical skill consisting of performance of BLS-D on mannequin.
Assessment criteria: Student evaluation skill will be performed by oral or written examination regarding the student knowledge and understanding regarding the main topics of the teaching.
Course unit contents: 1)How and because a correct clinical practice can prevent medical emergency in the dental office
2)Peri-operative patient evaluation
3)Anxiolysis, conscious sedation, peri-operative analgesia, local anaesthesia
4)Relative analgesia with nitrous oxide: theory and practice
5)Cardiorespiratory arrest and the BLS-D
6)BLS-D: practice and performance on the mannequin
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: 10 frontal lessons 2 hours long and 5 practical skill sessions 2 hours long; the practical sessions will be held on mannequin for the performance of the BLS-D and on the sedation machine for the practice of conscious sedation with nitrous oxide.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Because the topics presented during the lessons will be examined, it is strongly reccomended to be present at the lessons and to study the slides available upon request by the teacher.
