Syllabus
Prerequisites: Prerequisites of the course are: good knowledge of English, of literary terminology, and of the great epochs of English cultural history.
Students are asked to complete the English Literature 1 and 2 exams before taking English Literature 3.
Target skills and knowledge: The course has the following aims:
- appropriation of reading strategies that are useful in order to analyze narrative and dramatic texts;
- development of skills related to literary and cultural discussion;
- further study of the historical, social and political contexts that are needed to approach the (long) English 20th century.
Examination methods: The oral exam at the end of the course will also include an assessment of the students' class activities.
Assessment criteria: The oral exam tests the overall competence and skills acquired during the course as regards texts and contexts:
- knowledge of the relevant historical, social and political contexts and main authors;
- appropriation of analytical tools in order to study narrative and dramatic texts;
- skills needed for literary and cultural discussion.
Course unit contents: The course focuses on "English Literature in the (long) twentieth century" and analyzes the socio-historical contexts, the forms, the themes, the genres, the intertextual strategies in the fiction and in dramatic works of writers that are central to the development of contemporary English literature in the 20th and early 21st century.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, seminars, active participation of students in class, students' oral presentations on agreed topics (good work is evaluated).
Additional notes about suggested reading: The syllabus deals with narrative and dramatic texts by great authors of the 20th and early 21st century: Virginia Woolf, Harold Pinter, Samuel Beckett, Sarah Kane, Andrea Levy, Ian McEwan. Critical essays on authors and texts will be distributed in class and posted online during the course.
