Syllabus
Prerequisites: Excellent knowledge of English.
Target skills and knowledge: In-depth knowledge of literary, cultural, and historical texts and contexts concerning the United States in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries.
Examination methods: Oral exams.
Course unit contents: American Families

The course will offer a survey of American narratives between the end of Nineteenth and the end of Twentieth century, by paying special attention to the themes of the family and the relationship between self and community. In a perspective of literary and cultural history, within the framework of the representation of family ties and their changes, the questions that will be addressed will range from national myths (i.e., the American Adam, the Frontier, the American Dream) to racial and ethnic minorities, from gender relationships to the historical and geographical contexts in which the stories are embedded.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures. Analysis of literary and visual texts. Possibility of giving presentations.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Students are recommended to attend class regularly.
Non-attending students are required to read the entire "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".
The syllabus texts are available in the libraries of the University of Padua and/or on the web.
Students are expected to carry the syllabus materials (primary sources) on the day of the exam.
