Syllabus
Prerequisites: Students must have already attended the course “Lingua Inglese 1 primo anno”.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to hone the students’ receptive and productive skills at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and to introduce them to translation from English into Italian and from Italian into English. It also aims to provide the students with a basic theoretical background in English linguistics, so as to enable them to analyse written and oral texts.
Examination methods: Part A: End-of-module exam; end-of-module translation exam from English into Italian.

Part B: End-of-module exam or continuous assessment (for attending students) in listening comprehension; end-of-module exam or continuous assessment (for attending students) in spoken production; end-of-module exams in written production and translation from Italian into English.
Assessment criteria: The competences taught by Erik Castello will be evaluated with a written test based on lesson-content, language analysis, and academic reports written during the semester. Students’ translation skills will be tested with the translation of texts from and into Italian. Oral, writing and listening competences will be assessed by means of specific tests covering reception and production skills.
Course unit contents: Part A (1st semester): The course module delivered by Erik Castello aims to provide the students with some of the basic competences needed to analyse written texts and oral interactions in English and to translate and interpret them. The objective of the translation workshop is to introduce the students to translation from English into Italian.

Part B: (1st and 2nd semester): The course modules taught by Andrew Bailey and Gillian Davies, both in class and in the language laboratory, aim to help the students improve the following skills: spoken comprehension, spoken production, written production and translation from Italian into English.

For both Part A and Part B, the CMC software FirstClass and Moodle will be used.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Part A: In-depth study of some aspects of English grammar: noun and verb phrases; clauses. Analysis of written texts belonging to various genres and analysis of oral interactions. Academic report writing in English. Translation from English into Italian.

Part B: Business-letter writing; translation of texts (mainly business and tourist ones) from Italian into English; informal and formal spoken interaction and monological spoken production in English; listening comprehension and report writing. The language courses are based on the descriptors for the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Some activities will be combined with the students’ “European Language Portfolio” (ELP).
Additional notes about suggested reading: Further bibliography and materials will be provided during the course.
