Syllabus
Prerequisites: Students are warmly encouraged to pass both English Language I and English Literature I before attending this course
Target skills and knowledge: - detecting mediation-related linguistic and cultural topics in a literary text and reporting them
- acquisition of a higher linguistic, cultural competence as a means of comprehending English literary texts and describing them
- applying the principles of narratology to the reading and interpretation of literary texts

IMPORTANT WARNING: Of course, since the classes will be held in English, reaching these aims depends not only on continuous attendance, proper and respectful behaviour in class and thorough individual study, but also, if not crucially, on prior acquisition of the expected entrance level.
Examination methods: During the course I will very often effect an oral assessment of your learning progress by ways of questions in English, whose outcome will influence the final mark.

The final exam is oral. Students will be asked to discuss the historical and literary background of modern and contemporary England, and the authors and texts studied in class.

Students are free to take the oral exam in English or Italian, but they have to COMPULSORILY read the texts in English ONLY.

Attending students will also have the chance to take a final written exam on the literary texts before the oral exam. This written exam will be administered ONLY ONCE at the end of the course. Students who pass the written exam will take the oral exam on literary history and criticism only. The final mark will be the arithmetic mean between the written and the oral exams.
Assessment criteria: Frontal instruction
Classroom activities (Q&A)
Written exam at end of course (partial exam)
Oral exam (English/Italian)
Course unit contents: - the modern and contemporary period seen through the lens of literature, with a special emphasis on linguistic-cultural topics related to modern representation
- historical and cultural contexts of modern English literature
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal instruction

Additional notes about suggested reading: The literary texts are to be read in English. Italian-only editions not accepted.
