Syllabus
Prerequisites: Introductory computer science
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to present, in a systematic way, the methodologies of design and analysis of efficient data structures and algorithms and their implementation in the object oriented paradigm (i.e. using Java language).
Examination methods: Mid term examinations.
Final examination: written examination + oral colloquium
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will take into account the understanding of theoretical topics and the ability ti apply them in designing efficient algorithms and data structures.
Course unit contents: - Object oriented programming in Java, classes, interfaces, inheritance, iterator
- Algorithms, divide et impera strategy; analysis of algorithms, asymptotic analysis, recurrence, master theorem
- Trees: definitions and properties, traversal algorithms. Binary trees.
- Priority queues and heaps.
- Maps and hash tables
- Search trees: binary search trees, AVL trees, (2,4) trees
- Sorting: merge sort, quick-sort, a lower bound on sorting, bucket and radix sort. Disjoint sets.
- Pattern matching and tries.
- Graphs: definitions and implementations; graph traversal; directed graphs; weighted graphs; single-source and all sources shortest paths; minimum spanning trees.
