Syllabus
Prerequisites: Elementi di Microbiologia Organica e Biochimica- II year course
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge and comprehension of the different kinds of the potential pollution phenomena and their effects on the environment; knowledge of the environmental clean up processes and of the main operations and technologies for wastewater and solid waste treatments. Knowledge of the design and management parameters for water and waste treatment plants.
Examination methods: To evaluate the different skills and learned abilities, the exam is arranged in three parts:
1. Final written examination
2. Quiz tests
3. Project
Assessment criteria: Final written examination: 60%
Quiz tests : 20%
Project: 20%
Course unit contents: Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of water, wastewater and solid wastes.
Water pollution phenomena:
river pollution (oxygen sag curve, oxygenation models);
lake pollution (eutrophication, thermal characteristics of lakes, nutrients role, eutrophic index, mathematical models, interventions);
sea pollution (dilution and transport phenomena, pollution and auto-depuration phenomena, interventions, submarine pipeline). Treatment operations:
Physical units (mass transport, gas transfer, mixing, sedimentation, separation units, filtration, membrane filtration).
Chemical units: 
ionic exchange, oxidation and disinfection, chemical precipitaton.
Biological units: aerobic and anaerobic, kinetics, different reactors, residential time, sludge age, suspended ans fixed biomass.
Physical-chemical units:coagulation and flocculation, adsorption. 
Laboratory exercise.
Waste water treatment plants.
Waste water characteristics, flow rate calculation. Different wastewater treatment schemes. Different schemes of nitrification-denitrification process; phosphorous removal.
 Disinfection process and treatments. Sludge treatments: anaerobic and aerobic treatments; conditioning and dewatering.
Solid waste treatment plants.
Waste characteristics and production. Integrated solid waste management. problems related to the separated collection and recycle of the municipal solid waste. Environmental impacts of the waste treatment plants. Plants for material recovery. Biological treatment plants: anaerobic and aerobic reactors; composting. Plants for energy recovery. Landfilling. Leachate and biogas treatment.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Face to face lessons.

Visit to treatment plants.
Design activity during exercise time.
Project during lesson period with final document and presentation.
