Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge:: Knowledge of events and trends that have marked the history of Eastern Europe from the fifteenth to the twentieth century. Ability to understand cultures of Eastern Europe.
Ability to develop a complete historical view of the European past.
Course unit contents: The course focuses on traditionally neglected aspects of history in textbook narratives.
Planned learning activities: Eastern Europe in comparative European history. Geographies, peoples, cultures, religions. From empires to nations: pathways, periodization and historical interpretations. What is Central and Eastern Europe? What are the Balkans? The East European as otherness. The specificity of the Orthodox Europe, from the Balkans to Russia. Other Europe: the Balkans and Russia, 1800-2000: a comparative history. From the birth of nations to the nationalization of masses. The imperial dimension. The de-Ottomanization. Modernization. Liberal experiences, socialist experiences. The burden of the past.
A case-study: history of yugoslavism.
