Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge::
Course unit contents: The course offers an introduction to postcolonial theory and a series of critical perspectives from which Anglophone literatures and cultures may be profitably approached. It deals with the relationships between the imperial centre and its colonies, it investigates moments of appropriation and subversion of European culture in the postcolonial period, it discusses question of race and power relationships, and analyses colonial and contemporary literary and artistic expressions. The literary-cultural focus is on colonial and postcolonial South Africa.
Planned learning activities: a. Introduction to postcolonial theory and to the historical and cultural development of Anglophone literatures. We will study a selection of essays by authoritative voices in postcolonial thought (prof. Oboe) and specific contributions on the racial question from the American cultural experience (see the programme “Race and the American Cultural Imagination", Prof. Scacchi, 3 cfu).

b. South Africa from colony to postcolony: it deals with colonial and contemporary South African culture, seen through postcolonial thinking, literature (texts by Schreiner, Plaatje, Fugard and Coetzee), and films.
