Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge:: By the end of the course the students will have acquired a good knowledge of both the process by which the armed forces were established in Latin America and the complex ideological framework to which they referred so as to legitimize their frequent interventions in the political dinamics of the various countries in the region. Special attention will be paid to the Cold War era and the Brazilian, Chilean, and Argentine dictatorships.
Course unit contents: The establishment, development, and political functioning of the Latin-American armed forces in the contemporary era; the role of the armed forces as custodians of national sovereignty and security within the context of the Cold War, with special reference to the cases of Brazil, Chile, and Argentina.
Planned learning activities: The course in structured into three closely interrelated sections.
Part one will address the features of the armed forces in Latin America and will investigate their establishment and development since the colonial legacy.
Part two will offer an in-depth examination of the role of the armed forces and the set of ideological beliefs they referred to within the context of the Cold War, which is to be intended not only as the East-West confrontation, but also as a complex intertwinement of domestic and international conflicts and tensions.
Part three will analyze some aspects of the military initiatives in the diverse national contexts of Brazil, Chile, and Argentina, by resorting to the reading of several primary sources, to.
