Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge:: The student will have been introduced to a first understanding of the Arabic-Islamic civilization in its own and original features.
He will have known the basic structure of the Arabic language (linguistic-historical context of its formation, phonology, morphology, systems of transliteration).
He will have read in the context of the history of classical Arabic literature some of its important pages.
He will have known the cultural and socio-political reasons of movement of translation from Greek into Arabic between VIIIth and XIth century.
Course unit contents: Main Islamic features: the Qur'anic revelation, the Prophet Muḥammad, the dogma of i'ǧāz (5 hours).
Description of the structure of the Arabic language: the historical-linguistic frame of its formation, phonology, morphology, transliteration systems (12 hours).
The classical Arabic literature (essential features of its forms and its development, reading of some significant pages) (15 hours).
Establishment of a scientific Arabic prose thanks to the translations from Greek into Arabic (5 hours).
Planned learning activities: The course aims to introduce students to the understanding of the Arab-Islamic civilization in its own and original features and in its opening to the influences of the Greek tradition through the analysis of literary and scientific sources.

The course is divided into two parts: the first part will be devoted to Arabic language (linguistic-historical context of its formation, phonology, morphology, transliteration systems) and the presentation of the salient features of Islamic civilization (the Qur'anic revelation, the Prophet Muhammad , the dogma dell'i'ǧāz).

A second part will be devoted to classical Arabic literature, to the scientific literature influenced by the movement of translation from Greek into Arabic, and to the formation of Adab as a merger of the two previous forms.
