Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge:: The course is aimed at showing the relation between Latin and the other indo-european languages, especially the i.e. languages of the ancient Italy, and tracing the historical development of the Latin from the beginning (earliest texts date back to VII century B.C.) until to 'Proto-Romance'.
Course unit contents: The main problems concerning a history of the Latin language: some new approachs. An overview of the historical development of the Latin language down the centuries by means of the reading of epigraphic and literary texts.
Planned learning activities: Commentary on the archaic Latin Inscriptions compared with some meaningful inscriptions coming from Oscan- and Umbrian speaking areas. The Italic 'koiné' (VII-V cent. B.C.). Interferences in the Latin and Italic epigraphy (IV-II cent. B.C.): preliterary documents. Origin and development of the literary Latin from the beginning until the VI cent. A.D.: forms and genres.
