Syllabus
Prerequisites: A general knowledge of the problems and specific issues in Medieval History. A basic knowledge of the Latin language is appreciated as the course will also deal with the analysis of primary sources.
Target skills and knowledge: Ability to frame historically the examined phenomenon in terms of the different evidence (written and material) coeval and later.
Ability to analyze written texts, in terms of the vocabulary used, the textual tradition.
Ability to compare the evidence of both written and archaeological sources.

Course unit contents: Course Title: The building policy of barbarian kings (VI-IX centuries).
One of the criteria for assessing the good reputation of the individual barbarian kings was their degree of intervention in the building activity, concerning royal residences (palatia), but also public buildings (walls, baths, aqueducts). The origins and the development of the paradigm of the builder king will be examined through the various written sources pertaining to the kingdom of the Goths, the Visigoths, the Franks, the Vandals. These different tradition would then be reelaborated during the Carolingian period, expecially during Charlemagne's reign. The written sources will be compared with archaeological sources.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: After a first group of frontal teaching lessons (about 20 hours), the following teaching will have a seminar structure that will include the reading of texts by individual students and collective discussions.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Sources and papers for the seminar lectures will be given / distributed during the course.
