Prerequisites: Fundamental Physics
Calculus
Target skills and knowledge: Principles of classical wave Optics, working principles of optical components and systems, understanding of advanced texts, problem solving, design and project of optical systems, autonomous execution of experiences.
Examination methods: assignments during the course
Assessment criteria: Knowledge, competence, clarity, synthesis, correctness
Course unit contents: The course will present formally the following subjects.
Wave theory, wave equation, energy of waves. Electromagnetic waves, Helmholtz equation, and characteristics, waves in 3-D, attenuation. Energy of e.m. waves. Reflection and transmission at the surface of dielectrics. Stokes parameters and Jones vectors, Poincarè sphere. Interference. Standing waves, resonant cavities. Michelson and Fabry Perot interferometers. Thin films. Anisotropy, birifringence, index ellipsoid. Wave retarders. Optical activity, Faraday rotators. Polarizers and optical modulators. Dispersion. Diffraction theory, Fresnel and Fraunhofer approximations. Fourier optical transformation. Diffraction from a rectangular and circular slit. Diffraction grating. Cornu spiral, zone plate, Babinet principle. Coherence theory, spatial and temporal coherence, degree of coherence. Quantum optics principles: photons, particles, duality, wave function and its physical meaning, Schroedinger equation, atoms, molecules, solids, interaction of e.m. waves with matter.
