Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge:: Basic principles of energy conversion in different types of fluid machines and energy systems such as hydraulic turbines and hydroelectric plants, steam turbines and steam power plants, gas turbines; application areas of the different types of fluid machines and power plants, criteria for their selection; preliminary design procedures.
Course unit contents:
Planned learning activities: Hydroelectric and steam power plants: present situation and future perspectives.
Hydroelectric plants: site section and basic layout, evaluation of the water resource and economic evaluation of the project.
Pelton turbines: general features, runner and jet diameters, number of blades, relative path of the jet, blade geometry, nozzle and needle profiles, preliminary projects.
Francis Turbines and Propeller and Kaplan turbines: geometrical configurations, runner geometry, distributor and spiral casing, draft tube, preliminary projects.
Steam power plants: schemes and thermodynamic cycles; effects of the vaporization pressure, condensation pressure, superheating, reheating and regenerative heating on the cycle efficiency; application exercises.
Steam turbines: impulse stage a reaction stage; de Laval, Rateau, Parsons and Curtis turbines; steam turbine configurations; criteria for maximum efficiency in a steam turbine stage, load regulation; application exercises.
Gas turbines: schemes, thermodynamic cycles, energy balances; application exercises.
Introduction to cogeneration and combined cycle plants.
