Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge:: The course covers fundamental aspects and industrial applications of heat transfer and thermodynamics
Course unit contents: The student can perform experimental work in laboratory (2 hours): measurement of heat transfer coefficients during forced convection flow in a plate heat exchanger.

Planned learning activities: Thermodynamics of moist air: definitions and properties, psychrometric charts, adiabatic mixing, heating, cooling, humidification, air conditioning, water cooling towers, compressed air dehumidification.
Linde cycle.
Fundamentals of gas dynamics: sonic velocity, Mach number, isentropic flow in varying-area channels, subsonic and supersonic nozzles and diffusers, normal and oblique shocks, adiabatic flow with friction in constant area ducts (Fanno flow), flow with heat transfer in constant area ducts (Rayleigh flow).
Fundamental mechanisms of heat transfer: conduction, natural and forced convection, thermal radiation. Liquid and gas flow in mini and macrochannels: heat transfer and pressure drop. Heat transfer with phase change: pressure drop with gas-liquid two phase flow; condensation at low and high velocities of pure vapours, inside and outside tubes; nucleate boiling and critical heat flux, forced convection vaporisation . Thermal and hydraulic rate and design of heat exchangers: shell-and-tube, plate-and-frame, air-cooled and plate-fin gas-gas, condensers, boilers and evaporators. Heat transfer from combustion gases.
