Syllabus
Target skills and knowledge: The student will acquire knowledge on the availability and mobility of nutrients in the soil – plant system and on their physiological functions.
The student, at the end of the course, will possess knowledge and skills useful for understanding and overcoming, in the soil-plant system, factors limiting the productivity and quality of food products.
Course unit contents: Essential nutrients. Nutrient availability in the soil: physical, biological and chemical factors. Movement of nutrients to root surface: diffusion and mass flow. Rhizosphere: role of root exudates, mycorrhizae and adaptive response of the root system in relation to nutrient availability. Mobility of nutrients in the root: fluxes through the apoplast and the symplast. Role of the element physico-chemical properties of on their uptake. Release of nutrients into the xylem and long distance transport in the xylem and phloem. Immobilization and remobilization of nutrients. Nutrients availability in the soil and their function in the plant. Foliar application of mineral nutrients. Methods to assess soil fertility.
