Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student should know the fundamentals and the basic models of microeconomics and public economics.
Target skills and knowledge:: The student will show:
- to have a good knowledge of the economic mechanisms within the healthcare sector;
- to be able to use the methods of analysis of efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare programmes;
- to have a good knowledge of the organization and funding of main healthcare systems, and of the Italian National Health Service.
Course unit contents: The aim of the course is to provide students with:
- the fundamentals of Health Economics;
- a set of basic principles on issues about efficiency and equity in the health care sector;
- a general appraisal of the healthcare systems of developed countries and of Italian National Health Service.
Planned learning activities: The course considers nine topics:
1. An Introduction to Health Economics. Functions, expenditure and performance of healthcare systems
2. Main features of healthcare market and analysis of public intervention
3. The demand of health and of healthcare
4. The healthcare market: the agency relationship between physicians and patients and the control of the demand
5. Efficiency, effectiveness and quality of healthcare
6. Analysis of the supply of hospital care
7. The economic evaluation of healthcare programmes (Cost-Benefit Analysis, Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Cost-Utility Analysis)
8. Public-private mix in funding healthcare services: Project Financing for hospitals
9. The Italian health care system

Additional notes about suggested reading:: Attending students can prepare for the exam studying on "Lectures on Health Economics", nine lecture notes prepared by Prof. Vincenzo Rebba.
Teaching methods: Lectures with presentation of slides and other learning supports.
Assessment criteria: The final exam is written and it is based on several questions related to specif technical issues and theoretical topics on health economics.
