Course unit contents:
Planned learning activities: The course looks at the European construction as a succession of historical phases and analyses actors, events and dynamics from the late 1940s to the Nice Treaty. Lectures focuse on the external origins of integration and the role of American leadership in the aftermath of the II world war, the emergence of functionalism and sectoral integration, the institutional and political questions in the negotiations and implementation of the Rome Treaties, the role and policies of the six member states and of European political, economic and cultural √©lites,in setting up contents, aims and limits of European integration, the dynamical synthesis between enlargement and deepening, the role of the EEC and EPC in the international system of the 1970s, the origins of the second re-launching, continuities and changes in the passage from the EC to the EU, the path to monetary unification, institutional reform in the context of the Eastern enlargement, external relations and development cooperation. Attention is given to Italian European policy.
