Syllabus
Prerequisites: Interest in gender equality and in its implementation’s policies .
Knowledge of the XX-XXI Century history
Target skills and knowledge:: Training in a gendered way of understanding social reality and the policies implemented in order to reduce gender discrimination. Ability to deconstruct the universal neutral as the only interpretive paradigm of social relations.
Course unit contents: Development of a critical view of gender relations, starting with concrete issues and specific cases in interactive lectures
Planned learning activities: The course focuses on equal opportunity policies in Italy. There will be an introduction to the Equal Opportunity terminology, especially with regard to gendered citizenship, followed by the analysis of the institutions and the legislation on equal opportunities in Italy. Then there are the in-depth analysis of gender in the market place, with particular reference to the law and to the problems of discrimination, care work. A survey on the problems of migrants opens the horizon on the problem of gender stratification. With regard to the female body, harassment at work, prostitution, abortion, contraception, gender violence and stereotypes are the main topics of our lessons. Talking about “public space”, we will deep the analysis on citizenship, quotas, and gender representation. Best practices in equal opportunities policies mark the empiric part of the analysis, not always visible and often known

Teaching methods: Presentation of a syllabus. Lectures. Each group of subjects will be summarized and discussed watching short videos or making ad hoc tests.
Assessment criteria: In addition to a strong solicitation for the debate in a class, the final exam consists in the execution of a paper on two of the arguments of the course chosen among three proposed.
