Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge:: The course aims are:
1. to promote a critical knowledge of the evolution of education and main educational institutions (with particular reference to contemporary age). A particular attention will be paid to the figure of educator and its development (with particular reference to the latest years).
2. to offer some methodological elements to analyse historical sources from a pedagogical point of view.
Course unit contents: 1. Main theories of education in the 20th century
2. Main pedagogical problems in the contemporary age: texts and authors
3. Seminar: the profession of educator and its latest changes; social and educational services.
Planned learning activities: 1. Main theories of education in the XX century
- Modernity, pedagogy and science between 19th and 20th centuries
- New education and new pedagogy in the early 20th century. The “discovery” of childhood
- Pedagogy and educational institutions between the First and the Second World Wars
- Catholic and non-catholic education: tradition and innovation
- Differents points of view on education in the contemporary age

2. Main pedagogical problems in the contemporary age: texts and authors
- Main problems in pedagogical debate: pedagogy and education science; education in action; goals of education; methods of education; strategies; contexts; institutions
- Passages taken from famous pedagogists (Durkheim, Montessori, Dewey, Claparède, Ferrière, Decroly, Makarenko, Gentile, Maritain, Illich, Rogers, Visalberghi, Gardner, Morin) will be read and commented.

3. Seminar: the profession of educator and its latest changes; social and educational services
- From Sixties until contemporary age: a slow change
- New methods for children in difficulties
- Educators in he last fifty years

Teaching methods: Lessons, audio and video materials, guided discussions and reflections of students. The texts will be read and discussed.
Assessment criteria: Final test (oral and/or written). Students who don’t attend to the lessons have to study all the texts of the bibliography.
