Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge:: Obtaining technical abilities in the statistical analysis of data through the use of Excel, after the in depth examination of some aspects studied in the previous course “Social Statistics” and the development of the inferential area.
Course unit contents: After some introductory lessons on the use of Excel, the phases of the formation, management and use of statistical data (which the student has already known during the course of Social Statistics) will be reviewed through the use of the electronic spreadsheet.
In comparison with the previous course “Social Statistics”, the practical aspects connected with the information acquisition and the phenomena description will be favoured. Similarly, in depth examinations and advanced conceptualizations related to the use of an automatic analysis tool will be developed and will allow to consider large size dataset.
Lastly, the course will allow the student to develop in inferential area some aspects which he has already acquired from a descriptive viewpoint.
Planned learning activities: For the first part of the course, see the Social Statistics contents. In fact, in this course more concrete aspects of information acquisition, phenomena description and study in depth, will be privileged.
Then the course will allow the student to develop in inferential sector some aspects which he has already acquired from a descriptive viewpoint, considering point and interval estimates and hypothesis testing.
A preliminary point will refer to the different sample schemes. After the study of some probabilistic models (normal distribution, chi-square, Student’s t distribution, Snedecor’s F), the sample distribution of the mean will be examined.
Estimate and hypothesis testing will be studied with particular reference to the population mean. Developments will regard the comparisons between two or more populations (variance analysis) and the independence hypothesis testing.
Moreover, linear regression models (and multiple linear regressions) will be examined.

Teaching methods: Lessons supported by exercises using computer. Materials will be available to the students.
Assessment criteria: Examination using computer; the student will show the ability to use statistical methods implemented by spreadsheet to organize and study real datasets.
