Syllabus
Prerequisites: Solid language skills and linguistic competence at the B1 level.
No time wasters.
Target skills and knowledge: Consolidation of language skills at the B2 level (Common European Framework for Languages, see http://www.coe.int/t/DG4/Portfolio/?M=/main_pages/levels.html to know what is expected of you). Development of listening, writing and oral productive skills. Review of grammatical topics.
Examination methods: The exam is divided into various parts, completion of which depend on students’ attendance:
• Monographic part (Prof. Gesuato, 1ST semester only)
written test: sentence transformation exercises; fill-in-the blanks exercises; translation of sentences from/into English (see the exercises in the reading packet and in Falinski’s book to get a clear idea of what to expect). This counts as 50% of the final mark.
• Language development
o oral test: individual presentation on topics covered and for communicative purposes dealt with in class. This counts as 25% of the final mark.
o written test: dictation and a short written text (attenders: continuous assessment). This counts as 25% of the final mark.
Assessment criteria: accuracy, appropriacy, coherence and thoroughness in written text production;
appropriacy, richness and variety of content, understandability in oral production;
precisione and thoroughness in motivating the use of, and applying, grammatical rules
Course unit contents: Monographic part (Prof. Gesuato, one semester)
The monographic module aims to offer an in-depth analysis of the English verb. The goal is to consolidate students’ grammatical competence and to expand their vocabulary. Specific topics to be covered in class include: structure of the verb phrase, tense, aspect, word order, semantics of phrasal verbs, spelling and phonetics of the verb and verb phrase.
• Language development (2 semesters)
The classes held by the language experts (CELs) aim to consolidate students’ receptive and especially productive oral and written skills (in particular listening, pronunciation, monologic discourse and email writing).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: teacher-fronted lessons; practical activities
Additional notes about suggested reading: Course material includes lecture notes and a reading packet (available at Cornucopia Copy Centre, via B. Pellegrino) as well as the material that will made available by the CELs (see also the bibliography)
