Syllabus
Prerequisites: Solid language skills and linguistic competence at the B2 level.
No time-wasters.
Target skills and knowledge: Consolidation of linguistic competence and language skills at the C1 level of the Common European Framework for Languages. Development of reading, writing, listening, interactional and translation skills. Review of grammatical topics.
Examination methods: - The final exam consists of the following tests:
-- For the monographic module on the clause/sentence:
--- oral test: explanation, application and motivation of grammatical rules (see the reading packet and the bibliography). This counts as 25% of the final mark.

-- For the monographic module on translation:
--- written test: translation of a short text and comment on translation problems identified in the text. This counts as 25% of the final mark.

- For the oral practical activities
-- oral test: discussion of a film (agreed upon in advance) or reading passage. This counts as 25% of the final mark

- For the written practical activities
-- written test: translation of sentences from Italian into English, and essay writing. This counts as 25% of the final mark.
Assessment criteria: accuracy, thoroughness, appropriacy and coherence in text analysis, production and/or translation
Course unit contents: Monographic module I:

Held by Prof. S. Gesuato, this monographic module aims to offer an in-depth analysis of the English clause and sentence. The goal is to consolidate students’ grammatical competence and to expand their vocabulary. Specific topics to be covered in class include: types of clause constituents; order of constituents; types of clauses; sentence patterns.

Monographic module II: Held by prof. M. T. Musacchio, this monographic module aims to offer an overview linguistic theories of translation and their application with a view to developing translation, interlinguistic and intercultural competence. Specific topics to be covered in class include comparison/contrast of order of constituents, types of clauses, and sentence patterns in English and Italian.

The practice sessions held by the language experts (CELs) in both semesters aim to consolidate students’ receptive and productive oral, written and translation skills (including: a look at vocabulary for film genres, film criticism and recounting the plot of a film).
