Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge:: Consolidation of language skills at the B2 level (Common European Framework for Languages, see http://www.coe.int/t/DG4/Portfolio/?M=/main_pages/levels.html to know what is expected of you). Development of reading, writing, listening and oral skills. Review of grammatical topics.
Course unit contents: • Monographic part (Prof. Gesuato, 1ST semester only)
Held in the first semester, the monographic course aims to offer an in-depth analysis of the English verb. The goal is to consolidate students’ grammatical competence and to expand their vocabulary. Specific topics to be covered in class include: structure of the verb phrase, tense, aspect, word order, semantics of phrasal verbs.
• Language development (Dr. McGrath 1st semester, Dr. Guth 1st and 2nd semesters)
The classes held by the language experts (CELs) in both semesters aim to consolidate students’ receptive and productive oral and written skills. In the first semester Dr. McGrath will focus on reading comprehension and pronunciation, and Dr. Guth on writing and speaking. In the second semester students will engage in an online exchange with students of English as a foreign language in another country, and the focus will be on interactional skills and fluency.
Planned learning activities: For the monographic course: verb Aktionsart, structure of the verb phrase, tense, aspect, modality, syntax, semantics and pronunciation of verb forms, conditionals, auxiliaries, passive voice, causatives, resultatives, verb formation, verb chains, phrasal verbs, reported speech, order of subject and predicate

For the practical activities with the language experts: pronunciation practice, listening and reading comprehension, oral interactional skills, writing practice, international on-line exchange programme
