Syllabus
Prerequisites: AngloAmerican Literature 1
Target skills and knowledge: Introduction to the literature and sociocultural dynamics of the 20th century United States. Special attention to the participation of ethnic and racial minorities in the cultural and ideological construction of the United States as a nation.
Examination methods: Oral final exam
Assessment criteria: Command of the contents of the course and of critical tools; appropriate textual analysis skills; independent critical interpretation.
Class participation and attendance
Course unit contents: American Patchwork
This course contravenes the ideology of the United States as a (white) melting pot, and shows that the nation has been a contradictory mix-match of voices since its very creation. Despite its multivocality, the United States has often repressed and marginalized ethnic and racial groups. Only in the twentieth century did the United States start to face its multiracial and multiethnic past, after so-called minorities interrogated their belonging in such a controversial ideological construction of the nation. This course introduces students to texts that express such multicultural voices.
