Target skills and knowledge:: This class will allow students to acquire basic knowledge about how the cognitive system end groups work.
In particular, students will be able to learn cognitive mechanisms involved in attention and perception, in memory and thinking, in problem solving and in decision making.
Course unit contents: Basic knowledge about how man aquires, stores, recovers informations, learns new ideas, solves problems and makes decisions, will be provided. More in detail, teaching will analyze the sensory and perceptual experience, the role of attention in the stimuli identification and the environment representation. Then learning and memory will be studied. Further interest will be devoted to exploring the processes involved in concepts and categories construction and the representation of knowledge and the spatial relations.
Processes involved in language and thinking, in thinking and decision making will be discussed. Finally teaching will analyze the structure and the activity of groups.
Planned learning activities: Psychology as science and methods in psychological research. The most important schools of scientific psychology. Sensation and the mechanism of perception and attention, the perception of the environment. Learning and mechanisms of conditioning. Structure and processes of memory, the memory of significant events and the processes of knowledge representation. Language and communication. Thinking and fallacies of reasoning, problem-solving and creativity. Decision-making processes, errors in judgment and emotion. the measure of intellectual ability and application in cognitive science.
The group structure and mode of communication among group members. Processes of socialization and group development. Influence in the group and conformism. Factors that facilitate group work, the causes that limit the performance of group and management of their internal conflicts .

Additional notes about suggested reading:: The two volumes will be used only for the lessons of 9 credits
Teaching methods: Frontal lessons in class in which beside the presentation of theories and concepts of cognitive processes, discussions of classical phenomenon of the psychology will be promoted.
Assessment criteria: At the end of the class proficiency will be assessed with a written test.
