Syllabus
Prerequisites: General knowledge of contemporary history. A previous exam in Latin American history for the "laurea triennale" (bachelor degree) is advised.
Target skills and knowledge:: By the end of the course, drawing upon Argentina as a case study, students will acquire a good knowledge of a few relevant political transformations that numerous Latin American countries underwent in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with special attention to the troubled routes to the establishment of nation states, classic populisms, and the military dictatorships of the 1970s.
Course unit contents: History of Argentina in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Special attention will be paid to the establishment of the nation state, peronism and the military discatorship of the 1970s. These transformations will be placed within the broader context of the history of the whole region.
Planned learning activities: The course will be divided into three parts: 1) the complex process of the establishment of the nation state, from the "soberania de los pueblos" to the debate about the existence of an "Argentine nation" in the 1830s; 2) the crisis of the liberal regime and peronism; 3) the dictatorship of the years 1976-1983.
