Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student is supposed to have a basic knowledge of logic and history of philosophy, in particular with regard to classical German philosophy.
Target skills and knowledge:: The students need to have a general orientation in the dialectical structure of Hegel’s logic, they must be aware of the features of different logical patterns and be able to move within Hegel’s text, which is the focus of the module.
Course unit contents: The module is meant to concentrate on the notion of speculative logic or
dialectical logic. More specifically, the aim of the module is to
highlight the theoretical structures characterizing Hegel’s conception of logic and to problematize its relationship to the origin of the notion of logic, to the formal conception of logic and to transcendental logic.
Planned learning activities: The module consists in a direct analysis of Hegel’s Science of Logic, in particular with regard to the introduction, the prefaces and the first part (the Doctrine of Being).
Textbooks: G.W.F. Hegel, Scienza della Logica. Roma-Bari: laterza, 2008. vol. I Cerca nel catalogo
Additional notes about suggested reading:: For a first approach to Hegel see the book hegel, by Illetterati, giuspoli, Mendola, Carocci 2010
Teaching methods: The module will consists of teaching in lectures, which will provide a general introduction to the notion of logic by differentiating the formal conception of logic from the transcendental one and finally by analyzing the speculative or dialectic conception of logic. This introductory part will be followed by an analysis of the Hegelian text. In this part of the module students are supposed to actively interact in the interpretation of the text.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will consist in an oral exam at the end of the module. Every student will also have to write a paper (it will have to be submitted two weeks before the oral exam) – min 8000 /max 20000 characters, spaces included. The topic of the paper will need to be approved by the professor and it will have a secondary literature text on
Hegel’s logic as focus.
